
Filename extension is the last three characters after the dot (.) It is commonly used to denote information about what sort of data might be stored in the file.
An example would be addresses.txt the .txt indicating that it is a TEXT file.
It also associates the file with a program that has created the file and will open it.
Executable and System files with the following extensions should be treated with care and not deleted by inexperienced users. These are recognised by the following extensions.
.EXE .COM .DLL .SYS .INI .BAT .MSI .DRV .CPL .CFG and .REG
Data Files are usually created by the user . Some of the most common are listed below.
Text & Word Processing : .TXT .DOC .WPS .CSV .RTF .ASC

Email & Internet : .EML .HTML
Encrypted Documents from Acrobat : .PDF
Zipped File: .ZIP
